On Sunday at Abhayagiri Forest Monastery in Redwood Valley, 20 miles north of the City Of Ten Thousand Buddhas, two new monks went forth into the homeless life. Venerable Titapo became a Bhikkhu and Venerable Chunda (formerly Anagarika Lee) became a Shramanera. The ceremony was held outdoors in the forest, on a hillside platform above the monastery. The rain came and went, the wind blew and stopped, and 80 monks, family and well-wishers gave the new monks their blessings. The photograph shows Venerable Pasanno Bhikkhu, the Co-Abbot of the Monastery, who served as the Upadhyaya, or Preceptor, and Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi, who was the senior monastic present. Between myself and the two elders, we three had 100 years in robes!
